This is a ground-up rewrite of a piece I wrote as introductory music for a tabletop roleplaying game using the Star Trek Adventures ruleset. The goal was to create a unique “Trek” tune that evoked a similar mood to that one of Jerry Goldsmith’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” era themes. The rewrite has an air of persistence and discovery to it, and I’m very pleased with the orchestration. The mid-strings (celli and violas) ostinato creates a sense of the thrumming pulse of a warp core background sound-effect from the Star Trek series. That pulse also offers not just a sense of drive and motion, but also purposeful and persistent motion. The glockenspiel part is supposed to impart crystalline wonder and discovery that is very “Trek”. The piece ends with the thematic ST:TNG fanfare which roots this piece – and the storytelling content it was written for – squarely in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek milieu.
